Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights act that prohibits discrimination against students on the basis of their disability.  Section 504 protects all students with disabilities; those covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and those who are not in special education.  Section 504, like the IDEA, requires that educators deliver a free appropriate public education (FAPE), which is often accomplished by having school-based teams develop Section 504 plans to deliver a FAPE.  The purpose of this presentation is to explain the requirements of Section 504 and describe how the law affects issues such as discipline and bullying.

Join Mitchell Yell, Ph.D., Special Education Law expert and author of The Law and Special Education, for a 3-hour workshop that will include:

  • Overview of Section 504 and FAPE
  • Requirements of Section 504
  • How the law affects issues such as discipline and bullying
